I don't know how to explain it, listen to some JGB. She's always right with the program and sounds great. With the Dead, she had her moments, but often she was ... problematic. Listening to JGB, you never cringe when you hear Donna, she is perfectly integrated and she has a lovely voice.

the JGB was, after the mid 70's a band featuring female backup vocals. It was an integral part of the music. I play in a JGB styled band and we have two female vocalists, it is a large part of the JGB "sound" IMO. The Dead, not so much. She just didn't fit the big stadium rock style. JGB was rootsy, gospel, R&B, mostly very small settings (Keystone Berkley). The female backup vocals on Gommorah are chilling. We focused on getting that sound in our band...called Little Sense.

well there you go and I think your right for the most part.At times Donna just sounded out of place and it did not fit .Some call it caterwalling ,what ever it was it wasn't backup singing.I thought she had a Muscel Shoals Studio southern type of singing background which really did not come out. To me she was Yoko Ono lite.
